The Trip that was: October 22, 2009

A trip to Nienoord in Leek

Nienoord also has a shell grotto.  The story goes that a servant girl, nanny to the lord's daughter,  longed to see the treasury of Nienoord.  The owner's daughter took the girl to see it.  Overcome, the servant girl wore the jewels and danced around in the splendor, while her charge locked her inside, forgetting about her.  When the owner returned and found the servant inside and heard the story, he punished her for her nosiness and her vanity, by locking her inside until the walls were completely decorated in shells. When she finished, he released her. But by then she was an old woman, and seeing how haggard she had become, died.

On a happier note...Nienoord is also home to the carriage museum. They have a wide assortment of carriages, some mundane like a hearst carriage, to the royal and ornate.

Tot Ziens!
