The Trip that was: October 25, 2009

 2009

Oosterwolde. The hotel where we spent the night!

The next stop in our day was Leeuwarden.

Oldehove.  This is an unfinished, and severely leaning, church tower.  Started in 1529, construction was stopped in 1532 due to the fact it was leaning.  The rest of the church was demolished in 1595, but the leaning tower remains.

Meanwhile on the bench across from the church...

The Eise Eisinga Planetarium. Inside this little building, built into the rafters of the living room, is a working model of the solar system, and includes the zodiac calendar as well.  Built between 1774 to 1781 by an amateur astronomer, Eise Eisinga.  King William I was so impressed by it, he purchased the house and made it the Royal Planetarium.  It is has been nominated for a World Unesco Heritage Site.

Heading home to Amstelveen, we traveled across the Afsluitdijk.   We paused to walk along the causeway by the Wadden Sea.

We had dinner in Edam.  And I fell in love with this small jewel of a town.
